DHL Express is looking for a zestful Classification Agent to join & lead our talent acquisition team. He/she will have to classify the commodities in a shipment in accordance to the national tariff tables, and determining a preliminary assessment of the duties and taxes payable for shipments imported/exported through DHL Express.

Key Responsibilities

He/she will have to perform the following key activities:

  • Assist in the maintenance of the duties and tax disbursement records.
  • Assist the reconciliation of the disbursements to the recorded duty and tax statements.
  • Assist in the co-ordination activities between the clearance department and DHL finance/accounts department on the customs clearance related disbursements.
  • Determine the shipment value in accordance to the local valuation guidelines provided by the local authorities.
  • Reduce number of classification errors.
  • Determine and classify the shipment commodities in accordance to the national tariff classifications tables available, and determining the corresponding duty and tax rates, taking into consideration:
  • Country of origin for preferential treatment;
  • Concessions or Exemptions applicable to the shipment commodity or importer/exporter,
  • Applicable customer instructions recorded in the Customer Instruction Database Records.
  • Compute a preliminary assessment on the duty and taxes payable to the external agencies and fees or charges payable to DHL.
  • Assign the shipment records where it is not able to compute a preliminary duty and tax assessment due to incomplete data to the Clearance Support Group for resolution.
  • Assign the shipment record when it is determined to contain prohibited or restricted shipments (as identified from HTS classifications) to Clearance Support for verification and resolution.
  • He/she must be able to demonstrate ability to influence decisions/actions through provision of value-added inputs into the organization’s business processes.

  • Provide customer with duty and tax advice notification and to seek payment approval from these customers when the duty and tax amounts payable exceeds DHL’s payment limits.
  • Collate the clearance documents and coordinate handover of these documents with the assigned broker for BTO shipments.
  • Review the “Shipment in Bond” inventory report to ensure that these shipments are worked on a daily basis.
  • Manage maintenance of the customer instructions and customer general information databases to ensure that the databases are up to date and accurate.
  • Incumbent has no direct reports and authority over country line and functional personnel.
  • He/she should have informal influence to enable improvement and change within the organization.
  • Note: New customer instructions must be approved by the clearance manager or supervisor before it can be updated into the databases.

  • Coordinates investigations carried out locally by country or aviation resources.
  • Provide support, guidance and expertise to the investigation process and the follow-up.
  • Conducts investigations into security incidents e.g. loss/theft of shipments, company assets, and criminal acts against property or personnel.
  • Assist the Security Manager in the delivery of the SAFE training programme.
  • Assist and guide local and regional management in the handling of often complex legal, personnel and procedural issues and minimize DHL’s exposure to liability in any civil or criminal actions that may result from the incidents investigated.
  • Apply analytical processes to gauge losses, estimate the probability of recurrence, the financial impact and, most importantly take a pro-active counter measures.
  • Produce monthly reports of incidents and the subsequent investigations to country and regional management.
  • Comply with company policy, civil laws and national Labor Relations Rulings when conducting investigations to ensure the company is not exposed to criminal or civil charges.
  • Close cooperation with DHL Country Security Managers or appointees in conducting investigations.
